The vulgarity of comedian Robin Williams at last Wednesday’s big Democratic fundraiser featuring Bill Clinton and Al Gore, quoted at length in the May 26 CyberAlert, was noticed on Friday in New York Daily News and Washington Post gossip columns, as well as during the roundtable segment on FNC’s Special Report with Brit Hume, and two days later by Fox News Sunday. "Not everyone appreciated Robin Williams's humor at Wednesday night's $26.5 million Democratic National Committee fundraiser in honor of President Clinton. Some folks were offended by the comic's repeated use of dirty words -- none of which we can print here -- and his off-color jokes on such topics as drug use, masturbation and bodily noises. Williams did own up to his potty-mouth ways. ‘Whoa, there's a child in the front row. He's learning new words,’ he joked during his act before 12,000 at MCI Center. But the bad words kept coming. http://mrc.org/cyberalerts/2000/cyb20000531.asp#1
Comedian Robin Williams will also perform at the event, dubbed the "DNC Gala 2000: The National Tribute To President Clinton," and Democratic Party officials are hoping to exceed the party's one-day fundraising record of $12 million with the "barbecue-and-jeans" dinner and concert. Actor/comedian Robin Williams delivered a vulgarity-laced comedy routine, praising Al Gore and making fun of George Bush, Wednesday night at the DNC’s huge "Tribute to President Clinton," which was carried live by C-SPAN. [This item includes accurate quotations which feature vulgarities, including the F word. Skip down to item #2 if this will upset you.] In the midst of all this, Williams spotted a kid in the audience, prompting him to joke about his language: "Hello. There’s a child in the front row. We’ve learned some new words haven’t we?" http://mrc.org/cyberalerts/2000/cyb20000526.asp#1
Robin Williams, Paul Simon (news) and more than 50 other artists will expound on perceived threats to American freedom Monday at a Lincoln Center show to benefit the American Civil Liberties Union. The ACLU is defying a government demand that charities screen employees against a suspected terrorist "watch list" or forfeit support administered by the Combined Federal Campaign, under which government and military personnel may donate to charities of choice. Others attending will include Patti Smith (news), Jessica Lange, Richard Gere (news), Sarah Jones, Mos Def, Lou Reed (news), Philip Glass, Wyclef Jean and Tony Kushner. Even when talking about the war on terrorism, Williams is a cut-up. On planes: "They want to know, who's eating the kosher meal? Who's eating lamb? Who isn't eating lamb?" And then, the actor-comedian added, "To prove they're not practicing racial profiling, they grab an 85-year-old lady at some airport." But behind his quips — and even though the government has no official policy of tracking meals — is a serious message: "Our freedoms are under siege — for our own good, they tell us," he said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. Williams chose last year's Lawrence v. Texas decision striking down a sodomy law under which two men were arrested for having consensual sex at home. "That was basically about people breaking into your house while you're in the middle of a 'personal choice.' That's your ultimate liberty," Williams says. "We're doing this show to get people to notice that their rights are being eroded. You see it every day now — these bizarre encroachments on our freedoms."
