Whoopi Goldberg delivered an X-rated rant full of sexual innuendoes against President Bush last night at a Radio City gala that raised $7.5 million for the newly minted Democratic ticket of John Kerry and John Edwards. Waving a bottle of wine, she fired off a stream of vulgar sexual wordplays on Bush's name in a riff about female genitalia, and boasted that she'd refused to let Team Kerry clear her material "I Xeroxed my behind and I folded it up in an envelope and I sent it back with a big kiss mark on because we're Democrats — we're not afraid to laugh," July 09, 2004
LOS ANGELES — Comedian Billy Crystal (search) called it "Woodstock for really, really rich people" as Hollywood's artists came out to raise $5 million to put Democrat John Kerry (search) in the White House. Ticket prices for the evening started at $2,000 for the concert up to $25,000 per couple for the concert and a pre-show dinner for about 450 people, including the celebrities. The concert was sold out, although many donors didn't attend. The $5 million raised will be divided between Kerry's campaign and the Democratic National Committee, as will funds raised at a second concert in New York City on July 8. The New York concert will feature the Dave Matthews Band, Mary J. Blige, John Mellencamp, Jon Bon Jovi, Wyclef Jean, Whoopi Goldberg and others. Stars Turn Out for Kerry Fund-Raiser
Barbra Streisand headlined a celebrity-packed fundraiser in Los Angeles Sunday night which raised $6 million for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. The DCCC, chaired by Congresswoman Nita Lowey, raises money for House candidates. A September 24 DCCC press release listed “artists who are supporting the event,” most likely by sending a check, but which I did not see mentioned in any news story about the event: “Jack Nicholson, Martin Sheen, Ben Affleck, Maya Angelou, Marilyn and Alan Bergman, Billy Crystal, Robin Williams, Michael Douglas, James Gandolfini, Wesley Snipes, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, Goldie Hawn, Sally Field, Whoopi Goldberg, Christopher Reeve, Anjelica Huston, John Travolta, Kevin Spacey, and Annette Bening.” That press release is online at: http://www.dccc.org/press/newsreleases//2002-09-24.915.phtml http://www.mediaresearch.org/cyberalerts/2002/cyb20021001.asp#1
Raising money has always been more difficult for Democrats than it is for Republicans - who have been able to gather funds from big business with the promise of tax cuts. Clinton changed that by appealing to the big-hitters in the entertainment world - record industry executives, movie moguls and these days, new media magnates. At a fund-raiser on Saturday guests paid $1,000 each (£667) to get in and $25,000 (£16,685) to stay for dinner - all going to Hillary Clinton's Senate race. Actors and singers on stage included John Travolta, Shirley MacLaine, Diana Ross, Cher, Melissa Etheridge, Natalie Cole, Luther Vandross, Michael Bolton and Stevie Wonder. In the audience
were newlyweds Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, actors Rod Steiger and
Patrick Stewart, Whoopi Goldberg, and boxing legend Muhammad Ali.
