Spielberg, for example, is a host of the event but has not made an endorsement. Katzenberg and Geffen are backing Obama.

In an interview on Australian chat show ENOUGH ROPE, he fumed, "I was disappointed that Hollywood didn't do enough for John Kerry's campaign, compared to what Hollywood did for Bill Clinton's campaign.

"The democratic Hollywood base, power base and money base, really didn't come out this year, and I was surprised about that.

"It might have been that Hollywood is very interested in charisma and I do not think that Hollywood felt that John Kerry had the kind of charisma that Bill Clinton had and that they didn't come out in force.

"I thought John Kerry would have been a wonderful world leader and an American president."

The guest list included Barbra Streisand, Warren Beatty, Ben Affleck, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Lee Curtis and Steven Spielberg.

Organizers said Kerry raised about $3.2 million for the day and donors gave an additional $1 million to the Democratic National Committee. Kerry also held events Monday in Sacramento and San Francisco that raised around $3 million.

On Sunday, Barbra Streisand hosted a tribute to Bill Clinton at her beach-side home in Malibu as the president comes to the end of his tenure.

The event, which will raise money for a presidential library in Arkansas, was shrouded in secrecy. The White House refused to disclose the guest list, reveal the president's remarks or confirm reports that he raised as much as $10m (£6.6m).

The star-studded donor list for Al Gore's election campaign boasts 17 Oscar winners including Warren Beatty, Nicolas Cage, Kevin Costner, Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas, Tom Hanks, Tommy Lee Jones, Jack Nicholson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Steven Spielberg, Oliver Stone and Barbra Streisand.

UNITED STATES: BARACK OBAMA has raised an estimated $9 million (€6.3 million) in a single evening of fundraising in Hollywood, starting with a cocktail reception for 300 people followed by a performance for 800 by Barbra Streisand.

Admission to the cocktail party cost $28,500 (€19,900) per person and tickets for Ms Streisand's show cost $2,500 (€1,745).

Hollywood moguls David Geffen, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Steven Spielberg were among the top fundraisers for the event and guests included comedians Chris Rock and Sarah Silverman, actors Tobey Maguire, Pierce Brosnan, Will Ferrell and Jodie Foster.
