Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s message of hope and change was carried to Texarkana Sunday by actor Samuel L. Jackson.

“Barack Obama represents everything I was told I could be growing up. I am a child of segregation. When I grew up and people told me I could be president, I knew it was a lie. But now we have a representative... the American Dream is a reality. Anyone can grow up to be a president,” Jackson said.

The Academy Awards are important to actor Samuel L. Jackson — but not so much as stumping for Sen. Barack Obama.

Jackson said he skipped the chance of being an Oscar presenter Sunday in Los Angeles, instead choosing to drum up support for Obama in East Texas on Sunday afternoon. Obama is running against Sen. Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination.

During a six-minute monologue, Jackson told the crowd he supported Obama because of the senator's desire to re-create middle- class America.

"There are only two classes of people — haves and have nots," Jackson said. "I'm one of the fortunate ones that has become a have. I want others to have the same opportunity."

A self-described political animal in the 1960s, Jackson told the crowd he is making up for being apathetic during the last two presidential elections. He said he was out of the country when George W. Bush was first elected president.

"When I went to bed, my candidate had won," Jackson said, adding that he woke up the next morning to a different result. "Now I have an opportunity to do something before that happens again."

"(Obama) speaks out for those (middle-class) people," Jackson said. "The 'Leave it to Beaver' family is what he's all about."

"I think the face of our country will change with Obama as president," Jackson said. "It's important that our country reflects who we really are."

"I thought this was more important than the Oscars," Jackson said. "I was close enough, being in Shreveport working, to come and say that I care."

Obama, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, was just a few blocks away at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion for a fundraiser with a Hollywood guest list that included supermodels Heidi Klum and Cindy Crawford, boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard and movie stars Samuel L. Jackson and John Malkovich. While Obama didn't make an appearance at the BET Awards -- either live or on tape -- his presence was felt.

Barack Obama’s gala fundraiser tomorrow will attract the mandatory lineup of big-screen talent and boldface names — actors Samuel L. Jackson and Dennis Quaid, model Cindy Crawford and boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard — and confirm again that the entertainment industry remains one of the most reliable and abundant sources of Democratic campaign cash.

War talk in Washington is alarming and unnecessary.

We are patriotic Americans who share the belief that Saddam Hussein cannot be allowed to possess weapons of mass destruction. We support rigorous United Nations weapons inspections to assure Iraq’s effective disarmament.

However, a preemptive military invasion of Iraq will harm American national interests . Such a war will increase human suffering, arouse animosity tow a rd our country, increase the likelihood of terrorist attacks, damage the economy, and undermine our moral standing in the world. It will make us less, not more, secure .

We reject the doctrine—a reversal of long-held American tradition—that our country, alone, has the right to launch first-strike attacks.

The valid U.S. and U.N. objective of disarming Saddam Hussein can be achieved through legal diplomatic means. There is no need for war. Let us instead devote our resources to i m p roving the security and well-being of people here at home and around the world.
