Richard first achieved national prominence during the mid-1970s, when he served as one of the lead prosecutors on the Watergate Special Prosecution Force. Recognized as both a knowledgeable and experienced counselor and as a skilled and accomplished trial lawyer, he has been a key figure in some of the nation’s most significant governmental activities at the intersection of law and politics. From 1995 to 1996, for example, he acted as Chief Counsel (Minority) of the Senate Whitewater Committee; from 1976 to 1977, he was Special Outside Counsel for the Senate Subcommittee on Governmental Operations; and from 1973 to 1975, he held the position of Chief of the Watergate Special Prosecutor’s Watergate Task Force. Most recently, Richard served as one of ten commissioners on the bipartisan 9-11 Commission.

Clinton colleagues Richard Ben-Veniste and John Podesta reportedly expressed their extreme displeasure about the way the docudrama portrays the Clinton administration. Their frustration likely stems from the extensive efforts that were taken to keep the information from being made public.

Ben-Veniste's role as a longtime partisan Democrat attorney made him another highly questionable commission member.

Then there is Richard Ben-Veniste, the affluent Democrat and former chief of the passionately anti-Republican Watergate Task Force. Not to omit his key role in the Enron scandal for which he and his law firm received a $3 million retainer (with $200 million more to come by court order).

Ben-Veniste appeared at the hearing dressed to the nines like Nathan Detroit, armed not for a good crap game but for bear. Although he has recently been described as having "a well-earned reputation as a partisan attack dog," he is quite unlike his fulminating fellow Democrats in that he specializes in the kind of modulated vocal tones that naive people interpret as dispassionate but most people accurately identify as burning rage.
