Michael Stipe, Susan Sarandon, Cindy Sheehan and others marked the third anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq with a concert to benefit groups campaigning against the war NEW YORK, March 21, 2006
Bruce Springsteen and R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe stayed on message from the time they took the stage: vote John Kerry on Nov. 2. Springsteen and Stipe, both critics of the war in Iraq, took the stage together to introduce the first band, Bright Eyes, and to remind the crowd to vote. "This is a very important moment for every one of us and for our country," Stipe said. Later, during R.E.M.'s hourlong set, Stipe occasionally offered brief political comments. Introducing a song called Final Straw that was released the week the United States declared war on Iraq, he asked, "Did anyone watch the debates last night?" Thousands in the packed stadium cheered loudly, many raising their hands. Posted 10/1/2004 12:22 PM Updated 10/2/2004 7:00 AM

Vote for Change is a loose coalition of musicians brought together by a single idea — the need to make a change in the direction of our country. We share a belief that this is the most important election of our lifetime. We are fighting for a government that is open, rational, just and progressive. "We have an opportunity to change the direction our country is headed and to elect a government that is just, rational and respectful of the views and rights of the people it serves," said Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam. Artists participating in Vote for Change have merged their energies and talents to focus on states that are expected to have the closest race in the presidential election this fall. This unprecedented effort will include approximately 40 shows in 30 cities in 9 battleground states over the course of 10 days. http://www.moveonpac.org/vfc/info.html Vote for Change Tour - Featured Artists Pearl Jam- Bruce Springsteen- R.E.M.- Dave Matthews Band- Jurassic
