An exuberant crowd of nearly 2,000 packed New York City's Hammerstein Ballroom on Tuesday night ostensibly to voice their support for Sen. John Kerry, but President Bush had the dubious distinction of being the man of the hour. From hipsters to professionals to aging hippies, the audience was as diverse as the talent on stage. Attendees paid $25 to $500 to watch performances by rocker Perry Farrell, techno-musician Moby, singer Natalie Merchant and hip-hop collective The Roots. The event, sponsored by MoveOn.org, also unveiled a new TV ad campaign featuring such Hollywood stars as Scarlett Johannson, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos and Matt Damon. Several of the stars appearing in the ads were on hand as were other celebrity speakers, including actress Edie Falco, comedian Al Franken and actor and musician Kevin Bacon. But the longest and most enthusiastic standing ovation of the evening was saved for former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean. Wednesday, August 25, 2004 By Jane Roh
One of Sen. John Kerry's celebrity supporters is ready to pull out all the stops to get him elected. Republicans are shrieking over a suggestion by rocker Moby that Democrats spread gossip about President Bush on the Internet. Moby suggests that it's possible to seed doubt among Bush's far-right supporters on the Web. "You target his natural constituencies," says the Grammy-nominated techno-wizard. "For example, you can go on all the pro-life chat rooms and say you're an outraged right-wing voter and that you know that George Bush drove an ex-girlfriend to an abortion clinic and paid for her to get an abortion. "Then you go to an anti-immigration Web site chat room and ask, 'What's all this about George Bush proposing amnesty for illegal aliens?" Punk the prez? Moby's anti-Bush tricks
Rockers Unite to Oust Bush "[George W. Bush is] a half-wit President who was not legally elected". He went on to conclude that "maybe we should have a moment's silence for the fact that we are ruled by evil, evil people." DON'T JUST GRIN AND BLAIR IT, WARNS MOBY
"today the u.s supreme court ruled that all adult americans, be they straight or gay, have the right to engage in consensual sex as a right of privacy. and although i'm not gay i fully applaud the courts decision to extend these basic rights to all americans. just one step in making the united states a more civil and sane country." http://www.moby.com/cms/viewdiary.asp?Diary_ID=1366&ViewType=Current
WASHINGTON - Sen. Barack Obama's advertising team is getting some friendly competition from film pros with some Oscar clout like Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. "The spirit of the contest is to put into video form what it is that you think will help push Obama over the top," said Iliyse Hogue, the campaign director for MoveOn.org Political Action. "It's a great thing for aspiring ad makers and film makers who want to participate in a meaningful way." Participants in the "Obama in 30 Seconds" contest will have until April 1 to submit their entries. MoveOn members, which the organization places at 3.2 million people, will be able to vote on their favorites by watching them on the MoveOn Web site. The top 15 entries will then be judged by a panel of liberal activists, recording artists and Hollywood notables. Among them will be Affleck and Damon, both Academy Award-winning actors and writers. Also judging will be actor Steve Buscemi, film director Oliver Stone, singer songwriters Moby, Eddie Vedder and John Legend, civil rights leader Jesse Jackson and hip-hop entrepreneur Russell Simmons. From his online journal: 1- well, for starters they lost the presidential election by 500,000 votes and then had their friends in the supreme court 'install' Bush in office and no one in the united states apart from a few weird musician (ahem) seemed to mind or complain. 2-a multi-billion dollar corporation went bankrupt from illegal business practices in the biggest and most damaging corporate scandal of the last 10 years (enron). and the people who ran this corporation and who illegally defrauded thousands of people were not only Bush's best friends, butalso the people who had been invited by the white house to establish a national energy policy. but again, no one in the united states seemed to mind or complain. 3-the worst terrorist attack on the united states was perpetrated by people who had been trained by money that came from the united states (ciatraining camps in afghanistan) and led by a leader (bin laden) who comes from a family with long standing ties to Bush and Cheney. not to mention that the Bush appointed heads of the CIA and NSCdid nothing to prevent this terrorist attack, even ignoring information that had been presented to them by their own agents. but again, no one in the united states seemed to mind or complain. so in some ways it's understandable that Bush and co. are preparing for war in Iraq even though the UN and all of their allies are asking them to waitand exercise caution. i'm sure that George Bush has said to himself and to his cabinet, "look, the american people don't mind that i was a draft-dodging cheerleader when i was in college. they don't mind that i was a coke fiend and an alcoholic. they don't mind that we stole the election after losing it by 500,000 votes. they don't mind that enron was one of our biggest campaign supporters and that ceo ken lay was my best friend and policy advisor. they don't mind that we funded al qaeda and the taliban in afghanistan. they don't mind that we gave construction contracts to the bin laden family in kuwait after the gulf war. they don't mind that we've lobbied to open up the alaskan nationalwildlife refuge for destructive oil development. they don't mind that while we've been in power the stock market has lost over a trillion dollars in value and that unemployment is at a 10 year high. they don't mind anything, so we can pretty much do what we want and we'll never be held accountable." in some ways i can't blame Bush for acting with impunity, seeing as he's never been held accountable for any of his mistakes. http://www.moby.com/cms/viewdiary.asp?Diary_ID=1163&ViewType=Current
