Kate Capshaw Quotes Liberal Hall of Shame
LOS ANGELES -- Steven Spielberg and his wife, Kate Capshaw, are the latest celebrity donors to the fight against California's November ballot initiative that would overturn the state Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage. Spielberg and Capshaw have donated $100,000 to fight Proposition 8, they announced in a statement Monday. "By writing discrimination into our state constitution, Proposition 8 seeks to eliminate the right of each and every citizen in our state to marry regardless of sexual orientation," the statement said. "Such discrimination has NO place in California's constitution, or any other." Spielberg Donates Money to Support Gay Marriage
There’s no real organization in place yet, not even a rudimentary website. Going by the formal-sounding name Voices for a Senate Majority, the group has already signed agreements with a half-dozen Democratic challengers — Maine’s Tom Allen, Alaska’s Mark Begich, Minnesota’s Al Franken, New Hampshire’s Jeanne Shaheen and cousins Tom and Mark Udall from, respectively, New Mexico and Colorado — and is pledging a minimum of $100,000 to each of their campaigns. The idea started with alums of the Hollywood Women’s Political Committee, a Reagan-era power PAC that included Jane Fonda, Kate Capshaw, Penny Marshall, Daryl Hannah, Laura Dern, Sarah Jessica Parker and others. The political action committee disbanded shortly after raising $4 million for Bill Clinton’s 1996 reelection campaign. Following some recent informal reunions, former HWPC members brought along friends, and soon the gatherings grew to include dozens of new activists, all concerned about the Senate vetting process that might determine future nominees to the Supreme Court. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was a busy man Tuesday night, courting Hollywood power players in two soirees that earned a single-night fundraising record of $11 million. A-listers such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Jodie Foster, Tobey Maguire, Will
Ferrell, Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, and Renee Zellweger all made the list.
Directors supporting their preferred candidate included Steven Spielberg
(assigned to a table with his wife, Kate Capshaw, and uber-agent
Ari Emanuel), Peter Berg, Christopher Guest (with his wife, Jamie Lee
Curtis), James Mangold, Garry Marshall, Adam Shankman, and Robert Zemeckis.
Making the invite list from the TV world: Curb Your Enthusiasm's Larry
David, Office showrunner Greg Daniels, 24 star Dennis Haysbert, Sex and
the City director Michael Patrick King, Heroes creator Tim Kring, Aaron
Sorkin, Randy Jackson, Darren Star, and Joss Whedon. Music royalty on
call included Quincy Jones, Berry Gordy, Hans Zimmer, and Herb Alpert.
Of course, many of Hollywood's top executives also scored seats: the DreamWorks
cabal of David Geffen, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and Stacey Snider; Fox's Tom
Rothman and Jim Giannopoulos, and their boss Peter Chernin; Warner Bros.'
Barry Meyer; Sony's Michael Lynton; and Universal's Ron Meyer. So while
you may not be able to fork over $28K-plus for steak and potatoes with
the possible future leader of the free world, now you can at least envision
the crowd that handed over those hefty checks. (Editor's note: This is a faithful transcription of the guest list for the Obama fundraiser. It cannot be assumed that everyone on this list attended the event or sat at the tables to which they were assigned, nor does this list necessarily include all of the people who attended the event. Every attempt has been made to ensure that names are spelled correctly.) Obama's Hollywood fundraiser: Who was on the guest
