The event, which will raise money for a presidential library in Arkansas, was shrouded in secrecy. The White House refused to disclose the guest list, reveal the president's remarks or confirm reports that he raised as much as $10m (£6.6m). The star-studded donor list for Al Gore's election campaign boasts 17 Oscar winners including Warren Beatty, Nicolas Cage, Kevin Costner, Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas, Tom Hanks, Tommy Lee Jones, Jack Nicholson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Steven Spielberg, Oliver Stone and Barbra Streisand. The DCCC, chaired by Congresswoman Nita Lowey, raises money for House candidates. A September 24 DCCC press release listed “artists who are supporting the event,” most likely by sending a check, but which I did not see mentioned in any news story about the event: “Jack Nicholson, Martin Sheen, Ben Affleck, Maya Angelou, Marilyn and Alan Bergman, Billy Crystal, Robin Williams, Michael Douglas, James Gandolfini, Wesley Snipes, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, Goldie Hawn, Sally Field, Whoopi Goldberg, Christopher Reeve, Anjelica Huston, John Travolta, Kevin Spacey, and Annette Bening.” That press release is online at: http://www.dccc.org/press/newsreleases//2002-09-24.915.phtml http://www.mediaresearch.org/cyberalerts/2002/cyb20021001.asp#1
Nicholson: Well, I'm a longtime Clintonite. I guess that's no secret. I'm not a talking-points guy, Josh. I'm a rolling cannonball. I basically do it on my own. Mar 4 2008 8:30 AM EST
