Al Gore thought the Democratic National Convention would be his quality time of a lifetime. He'd forgotten about Bill and Hillary's insatiable fund-raising appetites. Instead of the convention, itself, being the big draw, the hot-ticket event has turned out to be the Saturday-night party to raise money for Hillary for Senate at a private swank Los Angeles estate – for 1,400 few close friends. Paul Anka, Michael Bolton, Toni Braxton, Cher, Melissa Etheridge, Patti LaBelle, Brian McKnight, Diana Ross, Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray, Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross, Ted Danson, Michael Douglas, Whoopi Goldberg, Goldie Hawn, Angelica Huston, Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine, Dylan McDermott, Rosa Parks, Gregory Peck, Jimmy Smits, Mary Steenburgen, John Travolta and Red Buttons. Barbra Streisand headlined a celebrity-packed fundraiser in Los Angeles Sunday night which raised $6 million for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. The DCCC, chaired by Congresswoman Nita Lowey, raises money for House candidates. A September 24 DCCC press release listed “artists who are supporting the event,” most likely by sending a check, but which I did not see mentioned in any news story about the event: “Jack Nicholson, Martin Sheen, Ben Affleck, Maya Angelou, Marilyn and Alan Bergman, Billy Crystal, Robin Williams, Michael Douglas, James Gandolfini, Wesley Snipes, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, Goldie Hawn, Sally Field, Whoopi Goldberg, Christopher Reeve, Anjelica Huston, John Travolta, Kevin Spacey, and Annette Bening.” That press release is online at: http://www.dccc.org/press/newsreleases//2002-09-24.915.phtml http://www.mediaresearch.org/cyberalerts/2002/cyb20021001.asp#1
