Call it the burning Bush. The co-founder of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream is on the road, towing a 12-foot-tall effigy of President Bush (news - web sites) with fake flames shooting out of the pants.

"In a polite society, you don't go up to a person and look at them in the face and say, 'You're a liar,'" Cohen said in a telephone interview before arriving in Spokane, the next stop on the Pants on Fire Tour.

We think it's a lot more dignified and there's a lot more decorum to say, 'Excuse me sir, your pants are getting a little warm, don't you think?'"

The "PantsOnFire-Mobile" is a trailer pulled behind a car. The Bush character wears a flight suit with the words "Mission Accomplished" emblazoned on the back, a reference to the president's declaration aboard the deck of an aircraft carrier that major hostilities had ended in Iraq (news - web sites). An electronic ticker on the front displays what Cohen says are Bush's lies.

"I believe that it's disrespectful of the president to essentially lead the country based on lies," he said. "If that happens, then I believe it's actually our patriotic duty to make people aware of it."

Caucus4Priorities, a group headed by Ben Cohen, co-founder of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, backed the Democratic presidential candidate on today. The group, dedicated to cutting wasteful Pentagon spending, says it has 10,000 Iowa members who promise to vote for Edwards in the Jan. 3 caucuses.

John Edwards hasn't endorsed anyone yet in the tight Democratic race.

But one of his best-known supporters -- Ben Cohen of Ben & Jerry's fame -- has opted for Barack Obama, the Illinois senator's campaign announced today.

"I support Barack Obama because he is the kind of leader America needs right now. By taking on special interests and uniting our country around a common purpose, he will change politics in Washington," Cohen said in a statement issued by the Obama camp. “When Barack Obama is President, we will finally have a government that works for all Americans.”

Edwards, the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2004, ended his second bid for president on Jan. 30. Despite entreaties from both Obama and Hillary Clinton, however, he has not thrown his support to either.
