"Has everyone lost their f--king minds? Doesn't anybody remember the illustrious Reagan-Bush years when people had no money and no jobs? What has happened to people's memories? It's like they have Alzheimer's or something,"

"I don't like Bush," she said. "I don't trust him. I don't like his record. He's stupid. He's lazy."

"Some woman said to me she was voting for him because she liked his dad, and I said, 'Good, because that's what you're getting.' If somebody's claim to fame is that they signed a law so that you can carry a gun to church – oh, give me a break."

"If you're black in this country, if you're a woman in this country, if you are any minority in this country at all, what could possibly possess you to vote Republican? "If you think the president is an ass, fine – after four years you can vote him out. But the Supreme Court – that's 30 years! The Jerry Falwells of this world will be right in your back pocket. You won't have one f--king right left."

"I'm supposed to go out and talk to people this week and tell them that if you vote for Ralph Nader that's all well and good, but a vote for Nader is a vote for Bush,"

Al Gore thought the Democratic National Convention would be his quality time of a lifetime. He'd forgotten about Bill and Hillary's insatiable fund-raising appetites.

Instead of the convention, itself, being the big draw, the hot-ticket event has turned out to be the Saturday-night party to raise money for Hillary for Senate at a private swank Los Angeles estate – for 1,400 few close friends.

Paul Anka, Michael Bolton, Toni Braxton, Cher, Melissa Etheridge, Patti LaBelle, Brian McKnight, Diana Ross, Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray, Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross, Ted Danson, Michael Douglas, Whoopi Goldberg, Goldie Hawn, Angelica Huston, Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine, Dylan McDermott, Rosa Parks, Gregory Peck, Jimmy Smits, Mary Steenburgen, John Travolta and Red Buttons.

Raising money has always been more difficult for Democrats than it is for Republicans - who have been able to gather funds from big business with the promise of tax cuts.

Clinton changed that by appealing to the big-hitters in the entertainment world - record industry executives, movie moguls and these days, new media magnates.

At a fund-raiser on Saturday guests paid $1,000 each (£667) to get in and $25,000 (£16,685) to stay for dinner - all going to Hillary Clinton's Senate race.

Actors and singers on stage included John Travolta, Shirley MacLaine, Diana Ross, Cher, Melissa Etheridge, Natalie Cole, Luther Vandross, Michael Bolton and Stevie Wonder.

In the audience were newlyweds Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, actors Rod Steiger and Patrick Stewart, Whoopi Goldberg, and boxing legend Muhammad Ali.
