Liberal Hall of Shame
The Top 1000 Liberals in America

SAN SEBASTIAN, Spain (AFP) — US filmmaker Woody Allen, best known for such comedy classics as "Annie Hall," says it will be no laughing matter if Barack Obama fails to win the race for the White House.

"It would be a disgrace and a humiliation if Barack Obama does not win," he told Spanish journalists at the ongoing 56th San Sebastian film festival, where his latest film "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" is being screened.

"It would be a very, very terrible thing for the United States in many, many ways," he said.

Democratic hopeful Obama, Allen said, is "so much better" than Republican rival John McCain, and "represents a huge step upward from (the) incompetence and misjudgement" of the Bush administration.

"It would be a terrible thing if the American public was not moved to vote for him, that they actually preferred more of the same."

While much in life is like the film, where the way you view a story determines whether it turns tragic or becomes a comedy, Allen insisted that the rise of George W Bush has the making of a true tragedy.

"If you observe him, it's quite amusing, if you listen to him as he speaks, if you follow him closely it would provide you a great many laughs. But it's the perfect example of islands of comedy, comic moments against a very, very tragic background," he said.

"Recently there has been a lot of controversy between the two countries, and I would hope that now the two countries could put all that behind them and start to build on what really has been a great, great friendship," he said in the video, called "Let's Fall in Love Again."

Allen, who has worked with the French tourist office before, said he doesn't want to refer to his french-fried potatoes as "freedom fries." "And I don't have to 'freedom kiss' my wife when what I really want to do is French kiss her," Allen added.
