George Whitefield December 16, 1714 - September 30, 1770
Whitefield a minister in the Church of England and one of the leaders of the Methodist movement. Whitefield was probably the most famous religious figure of the eighteenth century. In his lifetime, he preached at least 18,000 times to over 10 million Whitefield made 13 trips across the Atlantic Ocean to America. He spent 24 years of ministry in the British Isles and nine more in America. He was famous for his preaching in America which was a significant part of the Great Awakening movement of Christian revivals. Benjamin Franklin once attended a revival by Whitefield in Philadelphia and was greatly impressed with his ability to deliver a message. Before dying Whitefield requested to be buried under the
pulpit of this church, where his tomb remains to this day. |
