In 1658 Bunyan was indicted for preaching without a licence. He continued, however, and was imprisoned in November 1660. He was confined at first for three months, but on refusing to stop from preaching, his was imprisoned for a period of nearly 12 years. During his later years Bunyan enjoyed immense influence, and his services were demanded in almost every part of England.

Bunyan wrote The Pilgrim's Progress, one of the most widely read books in the English language.
