Talking About Affirmative Action

Myth: Affirmative Action is "reverse discrimination" — let's stop giving special rights to certain groups while others are left out.

Fact: Affirmative Action is fair!

Affirmative Action levels the playing field so people of color and all women have the chance to compete in education and in business.

Myth: Affirmative Action = Preferences

Fact: Affirmative Action = Equal Opportunities

Affirmative Action programs merely acknowledge that hundreds of years of discrimination cannot be erased in a few decades and still hold women and people of color back.

Judicial Nominees Special Report: Our Courts at Risk

What's at Stake:

George W. Bush is pulling out all the stops to imprint a conservative agenda on the U.S. judicial system—and now he's got lots of help. The 109th Congress is controlled by Republicans. The crucial Judiciary Committee is now chaired by Sen. Arlen Specter, who has promised not to stand in the way of any Bush nominee. The Bush administration, accelerating its drive to nominate right-wing ideologues to all levels of the federal judiciary, has sent scores of nominations to the Senate Judiciary Committee. The Senate has confirmed more than 200 of them.
