William Rehnquist was appointed by Richard Nixon to a position in the
Justice Department in 1969. In 1972, Nixon then appointed Rehnquist to
the U.S. Supreme Court as an Associate Justice. President Ronald Reagan
nominated Justice Rehnquist to the position of Chief Justice after the
retirement of Warren Burger and was confirmed in 1986.
