Steele spent three years at the Order of St. Augustine in preparation for the priesthood, but ultimately chose a career in law. He earned his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 1991. He is the first African American to chair the Republican National Committee. Steele was also the first African American to serve in a state-wide office in Maryland, as the Lieutenant Governor of Maryland from 2003 to 2007.
