A founder of the Republican Party. Blaine was elected to the House of Representatives from the state of Maine and served from 1863 to 1876. He was Speaker of the House of Representatives for three terms—during the 41st through 43rd Congresses. Blaine also ran successfully for the Senate, where he served from 1877-1881. He was Secretary of State in the Cabinets of Presidents James Garfield and Chester Arthur from March 5 to December 12, 1881. He also ran for President of the United States in 1884 as the Republican nominee, but lost to Grover Cleveland.
