Barry Morris Goldwater was a five-term Republican U.S. senator from Arizona (1953-65 and 1969-87) and the Republican nominee for President in 1964. Goldwater was defeated in 1964 by incumbent Democrat Lyndon B. Johnson. Goldwater was known for his strong conservative views.
