Jobs, 9/11 and the Defense of the United States

Democrats blame President Bush for the loss of millions of jobs in America. They say that more jobs have been lost under President Bush than any other President except Herbert Hoover. Please be advised that the majority of jobs lost during the Bush Administration occurred during the first few months after the attacks on 9/11. The devastation to the economy as well as the loss of human life only demonstrates that the greatest responsibility of our government is the active defense from those that want to do us harm. Government must do for citizens what they cannot do for themselves. One of the battles between conservatives and liberals for decades has been the battle between military spending versus social programs. Please note that individual citizens cannot stop planes from bombing the United States or stop intercontinental missiles from bombing our cities. However, individual citizens can go out and find work to support themselves. The attacks on 9/11, which was isolated to a very small part of this country, caused the deaths of thousands of people and also devastated the economy. And if you don't believe me- let me tell you my story.

I moved from Atlanta, Georgia to Florida just before September 11, 2001. I was working in the financial services industry and the economy had been slow for the past few years. The NASDAQ had pretty much collapsed and a lot of my generation that had been working for Internet companies had lost their jobs. However, the economy was beginning to show signs of recovery as the Bush tax cuts were beginning to have an impact. As a result, I thought it would be a good time to move. I resigned my position and moved back to Florida with no job, but determined to restart my career. However, all of my plans changed on September 11, 2001. I had my first job interview scheduled for that afternoon. I can tell you that after that day, the help wanted ads disappeared from newspapers and there were less and less jobs posted on places such as Monster.com. Within a very short time, layoffs began occurring across the country.

Lets examine what occurred following September 11, 2001. As a result of the attacks on that day, people stopped flying because they were afraid. Airline revenues declined, which led to layoffs and an eventual bail out. As less people were flying, the entire tourism industry suffered. Hotels, restaurants and all types of shopping outlets lost business. This caused many businesses in the sector to lay people off or close. This all had an impact on other sectors of the economy. The stock market also remained closed for a week. The day after it reopened the sell off was dramatic. The slowed economy, layoffs and fear led people to hold on to their money and not invest. As a result, the financial services industry laid off tens of thousands of employees. Also- please note that all around the city of New York businesses were forced to close because of the devastation. Was all of this George Bush's fault? Well- if you listen to Democrats it is.

As the months passed there were still not many job listings in the want ads of the newspaper or on Internet sites. There were jobs, but they were not what well-paying professional positions. I searched diligently and the only financial service jobs were commission positions. I had enough experience to know that during a recession, people don't invest and I was not going to work 15 hours a day for free. With a college degree in hand and experience working for good firms, I took a Customer Relations position.

Now that I have proven that 9/11 caused the loss of jobs and not President Bush, let me explain what President Bush has done in response to the above. President Bush reduced taxes in order to grow the economy and the economy is now growing. He has done this against the protest of Democrats that blame him. President Bush has gone on the offensive against terrorism by dismantling the Taliban in Afghanistan in short order and with little loss of life. President Bush has attacked the funding of terrorists by freezing the assets of terrorist groups- against the protest of some Democrats. President Bush signed the Patriot Act, which has led to the arrests of potential terrorists in the United States - against the protests of Democrats. President Bush has removed a ruthless dictator from power that started two wars, used chemical weapons on his own people, tortured his own people and funded families of suicide bombers - against the protest of Democrats. President Bush is attempting to establish a Democracy in the Middle East with the hope that Democracy will take root and spread to other countries - against the protest of Democrats. President Bush is attempting to install a missile defense shield to protect the United States. Once again, he has done this against the protests of Democrats who would rather spend money on social programs.

President Bush is attempting to protect America and give people more of their own money to spend in order that Americans can live a free, safe and prosperous life - against the protest of Democrats. Please note that America is not that large of a country if you consider today's weapons of mass destruction. Our populations and industries are concentrated in only a few select cities. If nuclear bombs were dropped on the cities of New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles and Washington what would be the result? I am certain that besides the great loss of life there would be a great recession as entire industries would be destroyed. Would we then blame the President for the loss of jobs? As previously stated- the greatest responsibility of government is the defense of the country. From all accounts, the attacks on September 11, 2001, were five years in the making. I would suggest taking a look at the previous administration if you want to find the truth.

One last note- I am no longer have a Customer Relations position. My situation has improved dramatically with the economy and I do this entire site by myself in my spare time.
