Abu Ghraib - a Football Analogy
Much has been made by liberals in reference to Abu Ghraib - but let me
give you a football analogy. Lets say that you are a Green Bay Packers'
fan back in the day and the Packers are in the Super Bowl facing the New
England Patriots. During the game the Patriots take cheap shots at Brett
Favre, they hit late, intentionally try to hurt players and use all types
of dirty tactics. As a result - a couple Packers retaliate and take a
couple of late shots at the quarterback of the Patriots. However, it is
minor as compared to what the Patriots did during the course of the game.
As a Packers' fan - you wouldn't say that the coaches orchestrated the
late hits and they should resign? Do you think that you would hear a Packers
fan in the crowd yelling that there should be an investigation to see
who at the top of the organization was involved in the late hits by the
Packers? I doubt you would hear such words from a true Packers fan. However,
what if you did? What if a person wearing a Green Bay Packers jersey stood
up in the crowd and started yelling such things? That person has the right
to freedom of speech. However- you also have the right to think and so
what would you think as a Packer's fan if you saw this? I would suggest
that you would think that this person is really not a Packers' fan.
Now let me take this a step further. What if the Green Bay Packers were
not playing the New England Patriots, but a team from North Korea? What
if this team from North Korea was not only taking cheap shots at the Packers,
but going into the stands and taking cheap shots and hurting innocent
fans? As a Packers fan and an American- how angry would you be that a
foreign team was intentionally trying to hurt your team as well as innocent
American spectators? What if this Packers' fan now stood up and started
yelling that the coaches should resign and there should be an investigation
over a couple of cheap shots taken at the North Korean's quaterback? What
would you think? You would think that not only is this person not rooting
for the Packers- he is not rooting for America.
Throughout history - American prisoners of war have been treated far
more severely than America has treated its prisoners of war. American
prisoners of war have been tortured, starved to death and executed by
their enemies. The treatment of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib by Americans
was not right, however, it in no way can be compared to what has happened
to Americans who have become prisoners of war by other countries. We have
also seen our enemies in the war on terror kidnap and behead innocent
civilians not involved in the war. We have seen them even go to the extreme
of killing innocent children with homicide bombers. Yet- Democrats have
been criticizing the Bush administration ever since the story about Abu
Ghraib broke. Ted Kennedy stated, "Shamefully, we now learn that
Saddam's torture chambers have reopened under new management – U.S. management".
Other leading Democrats such as former presidential nominee John Kerry
had called for former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld to resign and
also called for an investigation to see who in the Bush administration
was involved. Newspapers such as the NY Times have run story after story
for months about Abu Ghraib. Can you imagine a Green Bay newspaper running
story after story for weeks about a couple of late hits after the opposing
team took cheap shots and attacked spectators during a game?
The war on terror that America faces today is about the future freedom
of this world. As a result, the consequences are far greater than the
outcome of a football game. Draw your own conclusion; however, I submit
to you that the leaders of the Democratic Party that criticized the Bush
administration over the Abu Ghraib prison scandal have every right to
so, but they are not rooting for America. Democrats say that they are
exercising their freedom of speech and that it is wrong to question their
loyalty or patriotism. Sorry- but I disagree... these leaders of the Democratic
Party are placing their party affiliation (self interest) above their
own country. If a Packer's fan stood up and criticized and asked for an
investigation into the coaches of the Packers for a couple of hits against
a North Korean quarterback- a real Packers' fan would tell him to take
off his jersey and sit in the opposing stands.... I suggest that Democrats
that bash America over Abu Ghraib do the same.
