Bruce was born into slavery in Virginia, but traveled to Ohio at the start of the Civil War where he attended Oberlin College. He became a farmer in Mississippi and acquired great wealth and property. He represented Mississippi as a Republican U.S. Senator from 1875 to 1881 and was the first African American to serve a full term in the U.S. Senate. When his term was over in 1881, Bruce was appointed by President James Garfield to the office of Register of the Treasury. As such, Bruce was the first African-American to be represented on U.S. currency.
